Kids Timer - Duck & Friends App
I've built a side project called Kids Timer, an app that helps parents make everyday routines a little more fun for their kids. It's available on iOS and Android, built with React Native and Rive.
I had my design and animation skills as a starting point, and figured out the rest along the way.
💡 The idea: I was using the built-in timer app with my daughter and realised how uninspiring it was for a young child. I thought, what if the timer ended with a duck quack instead? Something visual, playful and a little bit silly.
The design was built around simplicity.
Then for a couple of months I deep dived in UX/UI and product design, learned how to work with interactivity and state machines (Rive), built a fully working prototype even before developing, and pick up a thing or two about marketing.
I designed a large circular countdown, bold numbers, and vibrant colors help young children see time passing without needing to read. (Have you noticed how many apps are just black and white?)
The characters are designed to give children something to look at briefly, and go back to the current activity. It keeps the overall experience calm rather than overstimulating. When the timer finishes there's a sense of reward.
Now
The timer app is now being used by around 10,000 people around the world. Most users make the most of the free Duck, while some choose to support the project through a subscription.
For me, it’s been such a rewarding journey, and most importantly, this is still a project that brings me a lot of joy. (Especially at bedtime routine, when my daughter still asks for "ducky ducky" to help her time brushing her teeth)
